The Tuesday after Thanksgiving has been designated at #GivingTuesday which kicks off the “giving season” when many individuals and organizations are focused on their end-of-year/holiday donations. Started in 2012 by the Belfer Center for Innovation and Social Impact at the 92nd Street Y – a cultural center in NYC that has been bringing people together in the name of service and giving since 1874. The idea behind #GivingTuesday is to bring together diverse groups of individuals, organizations and communities around the world for one common purpose: to celebrate and encourage giving.

So as you gather with family and friends over the Thanksgiving holiday, spark the discussion about how you may want to start your own #GivingTuesday traditions. Toss out some ideas and see if you can start your own movement. It can be as simple as collecting clothing items from your friends and families to donate to a local shelter or thrift store; coordinating a food drive for the lean, post-holiday winter months when food pantry shelves are bare. Or holding the door open for a stranger. #GivingTuesday is about creating a sense of community and recognizing that giving takes so many forms and we all have something great to give.]]>
